(CENTRAL ELGIN, ON) – The Elgin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), St. Thomas Detachment, has charged an individual following a traffic stop.

On June 7, 2024, at approximately 9:35 p.m., members of the Elgin OPP were dispatched to a location on Sparta Line east of Centennial Road, Municipality of Central Elgin, for a report of a stationary passenger vehicle with the engine running, occupied by an unconscious driver and 3-year-old child.

Elgin-St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Central Elgin Fire and Emergency Services, and Elgin OPP attended. While speaking to the driver, the investigating officer observed signs of intoxication, the driver was taken into custody without incident, and transported to the St. Thomas Police Service (STPS) for further testing following medical assessment by EMS on-scene.

While in custody at the STPS Headquarters, the individual assaulted an STPS officer and refused to provide a breath sample.

As a result of the investigation, Justin DAVIS, a 25-year-old from Woodstock was charged by the Elgin OPP with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
Failure or refusal to comply with demand
Additionally, the accused was charged for an additional offence by STPS.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Thomas on July 16, 2024.

The Children’s Aid Society of Oxford County were contacted, and arrangements were made to have a family member pick up the involved child.

The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive. Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.
