A Guelph man was arrested after another man was kicked in the back by a stranger while out for a morning walk.

Approximately 9 a.m. Saturday a man in his 50s was walking near Eramosa Road and King Street when he saw a younger man walking the other way. As they passed, the younger man drove his shoulder into the victim, causing him to fall against a railing.

They exchanged a few words and continued on their way, but the suspect turned and ran at the victim, kicking him in the back and causing him to fall down. The victim sustained injuries including scrapes and soreness in his back and hips but declined medical attention.

A short time later, officers were called to a business in the area for a shoplifting report and identified the assault suspect based on descriptions provided by the victim and witnesses.

A 25-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and theft under $5,000. He will appear in court June 7.

Three impaired arrests on weekend
Three motorists face impaired driving charges following separate incidents over the weekend.

Just after 11 p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to a parking lot on Kortright Road West for a report of a female sleeping in a running vehicle for the past two hours. Officers arrived and found a woman sleeping in the driver’s seat.

Officers woke her and noted a glass pipe under the driver’s seat. Quantities of suspected cocaine and crack cocaine were located in the driver’s purse. The woman had difficulty staying awake during the interaction with officers and was transported to the police station, where an officer trained in drug evaluation determined her ability to operate a vehicle was impaired.

A 27-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired driving and two counts of possessing a controlled substance.

Approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday, police were called for a collision at Victoria Road North and Eramosa Road. One of the drivers reported he had been rear-ended and he believed the other driver was impaired.

Officers arrived and spoke to the male, who has a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and other signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 48-year-old St. Clements man is charged with impaired driving.

Just before 8 p.m. Sunday, police were notified of a possible impaired driver leaving an address on Woolwich Street. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop a short time later. While speaking to a male officers noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and that he had urinated himself.

He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 48-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving while suspended.

Each of the accused had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were all released with upcoming court dates.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
